Model Explorer Documentation

Browse your Revit model, find elements with rules, inspect parameters and share selections. A guide to installing and using Model Explorer for Revit 2022–2027.

Installation & updates

The v2.0.1 Windows installer includes builds for Revit 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025, 2026 and 2027. A Model Explorer licence is required.

  1. Close Revit before installing or updating.
  2. Download Model Explorer v2.0.1 and run the installer. The signed publisher is AUTOM8LABS LTD.
  3. Follow the installer and select the Revit versions you use.
  4. Restart Revit and open a project. Go to Add-Ins → AUTOM8LABS → Model Explorer.
  5. Enter your Model Explorer licence key when prompted.

To update an existing installation, close Revit and run the latest installer again. The download link always serves the newest published build.

Quick start

  1. Open Model Explorer from Revit’s Add-Ins tab.
  2. Choose the scope at the top of the browser, such as the entire project or the active view.
  3. Use Sort By, Filter By and the search box to narrow the tree.
  4. Click an element to inspect its details, warnings and parameters. Tick elements or groups to build a selection.
  5. Use the toolbar to zoom to your selection, isolate it or export it to CSV.

Browsing & selection

The browser can show the entire project, active view, current selection, elements with warnings, linked models, or the project together with its links.

Group elements by category, level, workset, phase, family, element type or design option. Filters narrow the results to model elements, annotations, warnings or particular categories. Search further narrows the tree.

  • Check groups: use the tree checkboxes or the right-click menu to check or uncheck children.
  • Navigate: zoom to an element, isolate the selection and reset isolation from the toolbar.
  • Refresh: rebuild the browser after changes to your model.
  • Linked elements: the LINKED label identifies elements from another model.
  • Delete: review the confirmation before deleting model elements. This action changes your Revit project.

Parameters & warnings

Click an element in the tree to inspect it in the right-hand panel. Expand parameter groups to see names and values. Where editing is available, use the value field or dropdown; read-only values appear as text.

Text and numeric fields submit their edited value when focus leaves the field. Parameter changes affect the Revit model, so check the selected element and parameter before editing.

Elements with warnings are marked in the browser. Select one to read its warning messages, or use the warnings scope or filter to find other affected elements.

Finding elements with queries

The Query panel finds elements using parameter values and element properties.

  1. Choose Checked elements, All elements in tree or Entire model as the query scope.
  2. Choose whether to Match all rules or Match any rule.
  3. Click + Rule, choose a field and comparison, then enter a value where required. Add further rules as needed.
  4. Click Run and review the result summary.
  5. Click Check Matches to tick the results in the tree, then use the selection tools.

Clear removes the query rules. If a query returns no results, check its scope first: the default checked-elements scope needs a checked selection.

Selection sets & CSV

Saved selections

Check your elements and press Ctrl+S to save a selection set. Use the Saved Selection Sets dropdown and load button to recall a set for the current document. Saved sets are stored locally on your computer.

Exporting a selection

Tick the elements to include and click Export checked selection to CSV. The CSV contains these columns:

SourceFile, LinkInstanceName, ElementId, Category, Level, FamilyName, TypeName and Comment.

Loading a selection

Open the appropriate Revit model and load any referenced links, then click Load selection from CSV. Model Explorer checks matching elements and reports missing files or mismatches. Loading a CSV replaces the current checks; it does not import parameter edits.

Keep the SourceFile and ElementId columns. Element IDs belong to a particular model, so use the CSV with its original source files. Preserve LinkInstanceName and Category when sharing selections from linked models.

Troubleshooting

The Model Explorer button is missing

Close all Revit windows, run the installer again and check that your Revit version is selected. Restart Revit and look under Add-Ins → AUTOM8LABS.

The browser or query is empty

Check the display scope, clear the search and filters, then refresh. A current-selection scope requires a Revit selection; a checked-elements query requires checked items. Linked-model results require the links to be loaded.

A parameter cannot be edited

Only editable values show an input control. Revit’s parameter and document restrictions still apply. Confirm that you are inspecting the intended element in the correct model.

Licence activation needs attention

Check your internet connection and that the key is for Model Explorer. If activation still fails, contact support with the error message and your Revit and Model Explorer versions.
